The Ventura factor

I wrote about Donald Trump’s relationship with Jesse Ventura in “The Trump factor.” I think the relationship is illuminating and deserving of attention in a number of respects, including Trump’s discussion with Ventura late last year regarding the difficulties of a third-party presidential run.

Now Ventura has made it clear that he is available and eager to join the Trump ticket as a vice presidential candidate. “I shocked my staff today,” he said on his online video show Off the Grid on Tuesday. “I said, ‘You know what? As far as the Republicans are concerned, I hope Trump wins on the Republican side.’ Now, I’m not a Republican — I’m not a Democrat, either — so ultimately, I’d like somebody else to win overall.”

Some of us have the same concerns about Trump himself. As I say, their relationship is illuminating. As for Ventura’s comment that he’d “like somebody else to win overall,” I think it comes with what I call the Trump proviso. He will support Trump if he is on the ticket.
