Fans Rally Around ‘That Painting,’ A Symbol of Las Vegas Kitsch

LAS VEGAS—People here can no longer marvel at the public display of one million dollars, be dazzled by “the world’s largest rhinestone” or even watch showgirls prance in ostrich-feather headdresses. All have vanished.

But when a reality-television show took down a painting with a cult following among patrons at Vickie’s Diner, kitsch enthusiasts drew the line.

“It’s a crappy painting, but we love it,” said Allison Hayward, who created a Facebook page dedicated to the image—known as “That Painting”—which depicts a gun-toting man floating above a serene, wooded landscape.
