The Obama factor (5)

President Obama spoke at the memorial service held in honor of the officers murdered in Dallas last week. The White House has posted the video and excerpts here. I’ve embedded the video immediately below. It’s about 40 minutes long. I’ll add a link to the full text when the White House posts it. [UPDATE: The full text of the speech has been posted here.]

Campaigning for the presidency in 1968 Richard Nixon castigated then Attorney General Ramsey Clark as a conscientious objector in the war against crime. It was a line that was both witty and funny.

However, it is not sufficient unto the day. In Obama we have moved a step beyond. We have a president who has an opponent of the war against crime. He is an opponent of the war against crime in the name of racial equity.

The truth in the United States is that a properly functioning criminal justice system will produce the kind of racial disparities that we see in ours. The reason is plain. The racial disparities mirror underlying behavioral disparities.

Obama memorialized the officers at the outset of his remarks, but he’s not relenting in the campaign has and his friends in the Black Lives Matter crowd have waged against law enforcement. Obama will not stand down. He persists.

Before the blood was dry in the most recent police shootings this past week, for example, Obama pretended to have a handle on the facts. “What’s clear,” he declared, “is that these fatal shootings are not isolated incidents. They are symptomatic of the broader challenges within our criminal justice system, the racial disparities that appear across the system year after year, and the resulting lack of trust that exists between law enforcement and too many of the communities they serve.”

The New York Times notes Obama’s balance of praise for the heroism of police officers with a blunt acknowledgment of racial bias in the criminal justice system in Obama’s remarks today. “We can’t simply dismiss it as a symptom of political correctness or reverse racism,” he said. The lie remains the same.

Obama also found the occasion appropriate to decry the availability of guns. No event, however solemn, is beyond the reach of his political objectives.

Obama turned on his urban accent, his preacher style, his pretension to earnestness. Obama is a sort of political analogue to Elmer Gantry.
