The election is over (unless you’re Jill Stein), so it is time to get back to important things, like the Beach Boys. Except that we can’t even do that, because the cultural left has politicized the Beach Boys too. In the edition published right before the election, the New York Review of Books published a stupid article about the Beach Boys that lamented their representation of “beach privilege” (I guess because beach sand is white or something?).
There’s only one thing to do: ask Michael Anton to come to the rescue. Anton is the author of one of the best articles about the Beach Boys you’ll ever read, published a few years back in the superior Claremont Review of Books. In our long conversation, we not only talk about the Beach Boys, but their larger connection to California back when it was the center of “Reagan Country,” and what has happened to move California so sharply to the left.
