Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus are both dropping Ivanka Trump’s fashion line. Nordstrom claims that it’s making a business decision, based on declining sales of the brand. However, it has been under pressure from leftists who called for a boycott of Nordstrom for carrying Ivanka’s line. If sales actually have declined, it may be due to the boycott campaign.
It’s a similar story with Neiman Marcus. It dropped Ivanka Trump’s jewelry and accessory lines from its website based without explanation. Later, it cited “productivity” as the reason.
I don’t believe I’ve ever set foot in a Nordstrom or a Neiman Marcus store. I’ve certainly never purchased anything from either outfit. Thus, I’m not able to counter-boycott.
However, some conservatives of my acquaintance are planning to call Nordstrom’s executive office on Monday to say they intend to shred their credit card. If you have a Nordstrom card, or one from Neiman Marcus, you might consider doing the same.
UPDATE: Other than the fact that she’s Donald Trump’s daughter and supported his candidacy, what does the left have against Ivanka? As far as I know, her only contribution to Trump administration policy so far was to help sink, along with her husband, a draft executive order that would have overturned Obama-era enforcement of LGBT rights in the workplace. According to Politico, Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner persuaded the president, instead, to issue this statement:
President Donald J. Trump is determined to protect the rights of all Americans, including the LGBTQ community. President Trump continues to be respectful and supportive of LGBTQ rights, just as he was throughout the election.
Here’s something else to consider. According to this report, some of the world’s most popular clothing brands have been slammed for not being upfront with customers about their supply chains. Prada, Fendi, and Hermes are among the worst offenders, and Chanel comes in last.
Transparency is important to many because it enables them to know who actually made the clothing. They can then determine whether those entities complied with local law labor laws and sound environmental practices.
Do Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus carry product lines that won’t say who made the items? Probably.
If so, it would make more sense for principled leftists to pressure them to provide supply-chain transparency than to pressure them to drop the clothing line of a president’s daughter who is defending gay rights and reportedly is pushing for child-care and maternity leave legislation.
But let’s not assume that the leftists involved in the Ivanka boycott movement are anything other than spiteful.
JOHN adds: An alternative to boycotting Nordstrom and Neiman-Marcus (or perhaps an addition thereto) would be to buy something from Ivanka. I asked my wife to go to Ivanka Trump’s web site and buy something. It doesn’t have to be expensive. But if half a million conservatives each bought an item from the Ivanka Trump line, it would vastly outweigh the impact of the leftists’ boycott.
