Josh Earnest Doesn’t Deny Trump’s Surveillance Claims

Martha Raddatz of ABC asked former press secretary Josh Earnest whether he would deny President Trump’s claim that the Obama administration spied on his campaign. Much like former President Obama’s current spokesman, Earnest weaseled:

She asked Josh Earnest point-blank, “Can you categorically deny that the Obama Justice Department did not seek and obtain a FISA court order? [sic]

His response was full of weasel words: “What I can categorically deny, Martha, is that the White House was at all involved in directing, or interfering, or influencing an FBI investigation.”

“That’s not what I’m asking,” Raddatz pressed. “What I’m asking is, can you deny that the Obama Justice Department did not seek and obtain a FISA court ordered wiretap of the Trump campaign? [sic]

Take two from Earnest: “The simple answer to that question, Martha, is I don’t know. The fact is, even when I was in government, I was not in a position of being regularly briefed on an FBI criminal or counterintelligence investigation.”

I actually think that latter answer was probably truthful. Josh Earnest most likely has no idea whether the administration for which he was the spokesman bugged the opposing party’s presidential campaign. Reporters should keep asking these questions of Obama administration officials until they come to someone who can answer them.
