Trump savages Richard Blumenthal on Twitter

President Trump ripped Richard Blumenthal on Twitter following a television appearance by the obnoxious Connecticut Senator. He wrote:

Interesting to watch Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut talking about hoax Russian collusion when he was a phony Vietnam con artist!

Never in U.S.history has anyone lied or defrauded voters like Senator Richard Blumenthal. He told stories about his Vietnam battles and….

conquests, how brave he was, and it was all a lie. He cried like a baby and begged for forgiveness like a child. Now he judges collusion?

Later Trump added:

I think Senator Bluementhal should take a nice long vacation in Vietnam, where he lied about his service, so he can at least say he was there.

Blumenthal did, indeed, lie about his service. He was granted several deferments during the Vietnam era. Eventually, he joined the Marine Corps Reserve but did not serve in Vietnam, as he claimed to have done. However, as far as I know, Blumenthal did not tell stories about his Vietnam battles; nor do I recall him crying.

Blumenthal responded:

I have no idea about what is in his mind. What I do know is I will not be distracted by this bullying.

I’m no mind-reader but here’s my guess as to what’s in Trump’s mind. He thinks Blumenthal is a lying sack of s**t.

Blumenthal also argued that Trump’s tweets reinforce the need for legislation he is pushing that would prevent the president from firing Robert Mueller. In other words: Blumenthal lied about his military service; Trump pointed this out; therefore, we need legislation to protect Mueller.

Blumenthal isn’t just ethically deficient. He’s deficient in logic, as well.

I don’t think the U.S. president should launch personal attacks on U.S. Senators via Twitter. But if there is an exception to this principle, it should apply to Richard Blumenthal.
