House lifts ban on headwear to accommodate Ilhan Omar

Featured image The House of Representatives has lifted a 181-year-old ban against wearing hats on the floor of the House. The ban was instituted in 1837 as to push back against the British custom of wearing hats in parliament. The change has been made to accommodate newly-elected Ilhan Omar, a Muslim who wears hijab. It will also enable another newly-elected Muslim, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, to do the same. In addition, Democrats »

Christians Murdered In Egypt

Featured image From the New York Post: “Terrorists slaughter Coptic Christians in Egypt.” You don’t have to speculate about the terrorists’ allegiance. Gunmen killed at least seven Coptic Christians in Egypt as they were traveling on a bus near a monastery — the most serious assault on the religious minority in over a year. The attackers “killed seven people and wounded 14, all of whom are in the Sheikh Fadel hospital in »

Turkey’s hypocrisy, and Jamal Khashoggi’s

Featured image “Under Erdogan, journalists in peril.” That’s a headline (paper edition) of an article in today’s Washington Post. Correspondent Chico Harlan provides plenty of evidence to support the headline. The most compelling piece comes from the Committee to Protect Journalists. It found that Turkey jails more journalists than any other nation. Indeed, it jails more than China, Russia, and Egypt combined. The U.S. under President Trump jails approximately zero journalists. Whining »

Jamal Khashoggi and the Washington Post, Part Three

Featured image On Sunday, the Washington Post (paper edition) published a lengthy tribute to Jamal Khashoggi, its former columnist. The article is worth reading. Joby Warrick, Loveday Morris, and Souad Mekhennet present a more nuanced and informative account of Khashoggi than the Post has been willing to render until now. I think the Post has recognized that its portrait of Khashoggi as a pro-democracy saint needs to be modified slightly now that »

Super Eid is here

Featured image Minnesota Muslims are celebrating Eid today and tomorrow at US Bank Stadium in downtown Minneapolis. Harking back to the Super Bowl hosted at the stadium earlier this year, the organizers are calling the event Super Eid. Animals will be sacrificed at an undisclosed location off site in connection with the festivities. Animal sacrifice is apparently still a thing in Islam. The Star Tribune is discreet about this in the article »

The smearing of Fred Fleitz

Featured image Fred Fleitz has been appointed chief-of-staff of the National Security Council. Power Line has frequently linked to Fleitz’s work, particularly on Iran and the nuclear deal. We welcome his appointment. Naturally, those who view foreign policy from a vastly different perspective don’t welcome it. And that’s fine. They have every right to attack Fleitz’s positions and the way he has expressed them. But as is its wont, the left has »

Why Does the Islamic World Lag Behind?

Featured image The passing of Bernard Lewis last week at the age of 101 recalls to mind perhaps his most famous book title about the Muslim world, What Went Wrong?  But maybe a successor of sorts has been found in Duke University economist Timur Kuran, who has a long article forthcoming in the Journal of Economic Literature that paints a pretty bleak picture of the economic and social structure of Islamic nations. »

NBC News swings, hits self

Featured image What is it with NBC News? If you thought they’d hit rock bottom, you may have to revisit the question with a look at national reporter Heidi Przybyla’s piece on the Gatestone Institute last month: “John Bolton presided over anti-Muslim think tank.” This is an old-fashioned hit piece. The headline reveals the true object of the hit. John Bolton drives the left absolutely nuts. He has their number and he »

FBI sponsored meeting turns into anti-Trump rally

Featured image On Wednesday, I wrote about a BRIDGES meeting scheduled for later in the day. BRIDGES is a program pursuant to which Department of Justice/FBI personnel meet quarterly with representatives of the Muslim community in southeast Michigan. BRIDGES stands for Building Respect in Diverse Groups to Enhance Sensitivity. In practice, as I tried to show, it stands for whitewashing jihad and pandering to CAIR (Council on American Islamic Relations), a group »

A BRIDGES too far

Featured image Tonight, the Department of Justice/FBI will continue its 17-year practice of meeting quarterly with representatives of the Muslim community in southeast Michigan. It’s called a BRIDGES meeting. BRIDGES stands for Building Respect in Diverse Groups to Enhance Sensitivity. Not security, which should be the FBI’s mission. Sensitivity. Indeed, the U.S. Attorney’s office in Michigan no longer even mentions trying to prevent jihad as the mission of BRIDGES. Rather, the point »

The Trump-Macron “bromance”

Featured image William Drozdiak of the Washington Post writes about the strong relationship between Donald Trump and Emmanuel Macron. According to Drozdiak, the two speak to each other once or twice a week about policy, more than President Trump talks with any other world leader. Macron reportedly has influenced Trump on such key issues as expelling Russian diplomats and bombing Syria. Drozdiak finds this “bromance” surprising, and on a superficial level it »

A salute to Jason Falconer

Featured image You may recall the case of Dahir Adan, the Somali immigrant who went on a stabbing rampage in September 2016 at the Crossroads Center shopping mall in St. Cloud, Minnesota. Adan’s rampage represented a case of sudden jihad syndrome. Adan asked victims whether they were Muslim before stabbing them and shouted “Allahu Akbar” as he went along his merry way dressed in a security guard uniform. Adan attacked ten in »

Charges in Minnesota mosque bombing

Featured image The United States Attorney for Minnesota has just issued a press release disclosing the filing of charges against three Illinois men for the bombing the Dar al-Farooq Islamic Center (“the mosque”) in Bloomington, Minnesota. The press release identifies the three as Michael McWhorter, Joe Morris, and Michael Hari. They are alleged to have used an explosive device with the intent of damaging the center. Each of the three is identified »

Minnesota man sentenced in mall stabbings

Featured image We noted the case of “Minnesota man” Mahad Abdiaziz Abdiraham (or Abdirahman) this past November 14 and November 15. Abdiraham was charged with first-degree assault in connection with the stabbings of two customers at the Macy’s Mall of America’s Macy store on Sunday evening, November 12. The second of the two linked posts quotes the charges. The stabbing victims were brothers Alexander Sanchez (19 years old) and John Sanchez (25). »

Minnesota woman strikes St. Kate’s: An update

Featured image I wrote at length about the terrorist acts committed by Tnuza Jamal Hassan at St. Catherine University (formerly St. Catherine College, colloquially known as St. Kate’s) in St. Paul in the post “Minnesota woman strikes St. Kate’s.” At the time she had been charged with arson by local authorities, but the case cried out for more. Today the Office of the United States Attorney has announced that Hassan has been »

Minnesota woman strikes St. Kate’s

Featured image St. Catherine University (a/k/a St. Kate’s, formerly St. Catherine College) sits on a leafy 110-acre campus in the Highland Park neighborhood of St. Paul. It is located a few blocks down the street from my high school alma mater and within shouting distance of Macalester College as well as St. Thomas University. A “Minnesota woman” went on an arson rampage at St. Kate’s this past Wednesday. Tnuza Jamal Hassan — »
