More profundity from the Doctor
The Washington Post reports that Howard Dean has said his decision as governor to sign the bill legalizing civil unions for gays in Vermont was influenced by his Christian views. Dean concluded that "if God had thought homosexuality is a sin, he would not have created gay people." Under Dean's logic, though, I suppose we could also say that if God had thought sin is a sin, he would not have created sinners.
Steven Hayward of No Left Turns questions whether this latest pronouncement will help fulfill Dean's stated goal of broadening his appeal by talking about faith. But, says Hayward, "at least he’s locked up the Unitarian vote."
HINDROCKET adds: Howard Dean has said more dumb things in a short time than any politician in memory. "Not ready for prime time" is too charitable a characterization. But when he talks about religion, the wheels really come off. I suppose you could argue with equal plausibility that God must want all gays to die, since he created the AIDS virus. If Dean wants to be taken seriously by anyone who has spent more than five minutes thinking about theological matters, he'd better give the religion talk a rest.
