In his Daily Standard column this morning, Paul Mirengoff takes a look at Columbia University's ad hoc grievance committee report on the university's Middle East and Asian Language and Culture department: "Conduct unbecoming." On Paul's reading, the university is assuming the prerogatives it wielded in days of old when it held itself to stand in loco parentis. In this case, however, the parent is a child abuser who sends out the message that the kids better not tell on daddy. UPDATE: At NRO's Corner, Stanley Kurtz comments on Paul's piece: "What a relief! I’ve just read Paul Mirengoff’s piece on the Columbia whitewash. Here at last is an excellent description of the outrage The New York Times abetted with its corrupt deal. Next time you see me writing about legislation designed to reform Title VI aid to Middle East studies departments, think Columbia University and you’ll understand what I’m talking about."
