The speaker speaks

Lance McMurray of Red State Rant has teamed up with Trey Jackson of Jackson's Junction to conduct a multiblog interview of former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. Lance posts my question and the Speaker's answer under the heading "John McCain's moral obligation":

Lance: This question is from Power Line.
Do you think that President Bush is missing any tricks in enforcing party discipline in the Senate on basic matters such as staffing the Executive branch? The judicial branch?

Speaker Gingrich: Well, I’m not sure how you enforce discipline in the Senate. It’s the nature of the senate but it does seem to me that when the President pays attention and he does a national radio address on something like the right to get a vote up or down on judges, suddenly the temperature of the Senate changes. So my guess is more attention paid to educating the country would in fact move the senate and it will be interesting to see in the next few days because they’ve got a very important nomination to the United Nations John Bolton. They’ve also got several judges coming up. Liberals as recently as this morning are trying to find a way to break the agreement. I think John McCain and those that signed on to the agreement have a moral obligation to change the rules of the Senate if the Democrats break their word.

The question and answer of course bear on one of the subjects addressed in Paul's Daily Standard column linked below. The rest of the interview with Gingrich is interesting and worth a look.
