London Bomber Update

July 16, 2005 Posted by John at 3:14 PM

It's a slow news day--so slow, that on our radio show today I suggested we talk about sports. I was voted down, partly because there isn't any sports news, either.

I did run across the latest on the London bomber investigation in the Sun. There is some interesting speculation about whether the bombers knew they were going to be blown up:

There is also speculation the four bombers were DUPED into carrying their bombs without realising they would explode while still in their possession. Sir Ian admitted it was “puzzling” that the gang were carrying personal identity documents.

The bombers had also bought a pay-and-display ticket for their hire car at Luton Railway Station.

One security source said: “It is odd that they bought that parking ticket — not what you would do if you knew you were about to die.

“There is a slim possibility they were set up — the bombs primed to go off earlier than they expected.”

Seems highly unlikely. On the other hand, there were reports that most of the September 11 terrorists didn't know that they were on a suicide mission.

There's also this rather astonishing account of goings-on at the flat that was apparently used for bomb-making by the terrorists:

In the final days Shehzad Tanweer, Mohammad Sidique Khan and Hasib Hussain made repeated late-night visits there arriving together in Tanweer’s N-reg red Mercedes.

Neighbour Geoff Thompson, 57, said: “I saw a group of youths arrive a few times at the flat. A really weird thing is that about two weeks ago the windows of the flat were open and all the leaves on the bushes outside turned brown. There were chemicals or something coming out.”

Next time, call the police!
