Please quit your day job

If the Washington Press Club was looking for balance at its annual congresional dinner, that's what it got from its two comedy acts. Democrat Steny Hoyer, the House Minority Whip, trashed the Republican president, while Sen. Arlen Specter trashed former and current Republican Senators.

Hoyer showed the better taste of the two; indeed, it was no contest. Here's Specter on former vice president Dan Quayle -- "Beyond not knowing how to spell the word potato, Quayle thinks 'harass' is two words."

What about Bob Dole, Specter's fellow native of Russell, Kansas? Specter says he called Dole on his 82nd birthday to congratulate him. "I said 'Bob, how you feel?' Dole replied, "I feel like a teenager. Problem is, I can't find one."

On Alphone D'Amato: "I was riding a train once [with D'Amato]. The porter came by asking passengers, 'What'll it be, rye, Scotch or bourbon?' A minister on the train was offended, indignantly exclaimining 'rye, Scotch, or bourbon? Why, I'd commit adultery first.' D'Amato jumped up and yell, "Wait, wait! I didn't know that was a choice.'"

Finally, Specter reported that Sen. Sam Brownback is working on a movie, called "Brownback Mountain" about "two cowboys who go straight and devote their energies to ending stem-cell resarch." [I confess that I found this one mildly amusing].

The phrase "don't quit your day job" comes to mind. But in the case of Sen Specter. . . .
