What time is it in Russia?

Jonathan Brent is the editorial director of the Yale University Press. This past May in National Review John Miller paid tribute to Brent's "great publishing project" chronicling the evils of Soviet Communism in a series of books published by Yale. As the New Criterion continues its twenty-fifth anniversary celebration with its October issue, it has published Brent's timely essay: "What time is it in Russia?" Brent's troubling essay was written before the murder of Anna Politkovskaya. Not enough is known yet about her murder to understand exactly where it fits in the portrait that Brent draws. Today's Washington Post publishes Politkovskaya's previously unpublished essay on her journalistic ordeal in Putin's Russia. It sheds additional light on the question that Brent raises.
