Take Me Out to the Ball Park

I'm not sure what it is about the Washington Nationals' new stadium that brings out the worst in our elite media. Paul noted on Monday that the Washington Post subjected the stadium to an architecture review from a far-left, maybe outright fascist, perspective. The New York Times had its problems too, as today's correction acknowledges:

An article on Monday about the Washington Nationals’ first game in their new stadium referred incorrectly in some editions to Bob Feller and Honus Wagner, who are among former ballplayers featured on outsized photographs in the stadium’s corridors. Feller and Wagner are part of the Nationals’ salute to Hall of Famers from other cities; they never played for the Washington Senators. (Feller played for the Cleveland Indians, and Wagner mostly for the Pittsburgh Pirates.)

The mind reels. Honus Wagner was one of the first five members of the Hall of Fame, maybe the greatest shortstop ever. "Rapid" Robert Feller was one of the best and most famous pitchers of the modern era. (Like a number of players of his time, he was a war hero, too.) The Washington Senators--as Paul can attest, a sorry bunch through most of their history--wish they'd had Wagner and Feller playing for them; Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle, too.

It's remarkable that the Times would send a reporter to cover a baseball story who knows nothing at all about baseball. It makes you wonder how much their other reporters know about politics and economics.
