In Search of a Schumer conservative

The Senate Democrats are quite the ironists. This story in the Washington Post on the Estrada nomination has them accusing President Bush of trying to “run roughshod over the Senate” by insisting on a vote on his nominee. But Chuck Schumer tops this by claiming that “if the Senate were left to its own devices, we could come up with a compromise candidate who would be conservative but not extreme.” Yes, if the president would only ignore his constitutional duty, I’m sure that Chuck Schumer would pick a non-extreme conservative jurist in the David Souter mold.
