On Friday I participated in a panel discussion on the impending war with Iraq at South High School in Minneapolis. One of the participants was Phil Steger of the Committee for a Non-Violent World. Listening to Phil at any length could cause otherwise reasonable people to become believers in violence for its own sake, but what most interested me about his remarks was the veiled threat that once war began the “peace” movement would continue by raising obstacles to prosecution of the war. I wasn’t quite sure what to make of his comments, but David Horowitz notes how the “antiwar” brigades are gearing up to convert their “dissent” into sabotage once the war starts: “The fifth column left declares war.” Given Steger’s remarks on Friday, I think David is on to something here.
