Rich Lowry is puzzled by the trouble Joe Lieberman is having garnering support from Jewish Democrats. Lowry attributes this to a “paranoid streak” that causes some Jews to wonder whether America is ready for a Jewish President. Maybe, but I suspect the explanation is simpler: most Jewish Democrats are liberals. Indeed, for some secular Jews, political liberalism appears to be almost a substitute for religious faith. Lieberman, the most conservative candidate in the Democratic field, has limited appeal for these important donors. Lowry notes that Lieberman is running especially strong among Southern Christians–a fact that not too many years ago would have been considered surprising.
