Iranian Group Puts Down Arms

It’s hard to tell the players without a scorecard, but the Mujahedeen Khalq, a dissident Iranian group operating in Iraq–formerly with the support of Saddam Hussein’s government–laid down its arms yesterday. American officials declined to call what happened a “surrender,” but the pacification of the Mujahedeen Khaiq was brought about by its troops being surrounded by elements of the V Corps. The Mujahedeen Khaiq, while hostile to the Iranian Mullahs, is equally hostile to the U.S., and has been classified as a terrorist organization. Its suppression will contribute to the pacification of Iraq, but it also underscores how far that country has to go before it can be considered safe.
