Guys, I’m totally unqualfied to weigh in on the merit of Charlie Rich. However, I remember reading a story about him that has stuck with me for more than 25 years. As I recall the story (and I can’t vouch for my memory on every detail), Rich sang the National Anthem at a football game involving the Memphis Southmen of a 1970s NFL-competitor league. Apparently, he struggled with the song, as many have. Elvis was in the house and he consoled Rich by reminding him of how difficult the Anthem is. Rich replied, “Yeah, it ain’t Behind Closed Doors.”
