Ari Fleischer took a tougher line against Palestinian terrorists today while briefing reporters traveling with the President:
“The issue is Hamas. The terrorists are Hamas….The issue is not Israel, the issue is not the Palestinian Authority, the issue is terrorists who are killing in an attempt to stop the (peace) process.”
That’s mostly right, but there is a second issue: whether the Palestinian Authority is either willing or able to stop the terrorists. As Fleischer himself said in response to a question from a reporter who asked whether President Bush would personally telephone the parties: “It’s not as if a phone call will get Hamas to stop being terrorists.”
