Timeless in Havana

This lovely photo is of the Spanish Embassy’s Cultural Center in Havana. The Cuban government is taking over the center, alleging that it has “nurtured government critics.” Cuba is a country caught in a time warp; it still looks pretty much as it did in the 1950’s (but fifty years older and seedier). Cubans–lucky Cubans, that is–drive cars that would have been in junkyards decades ago nearly anywhere else, and buildings are generally charming, although decrepit, since no one can afford to build new ones. When Fidel finally dies or is overthrown, the liberation of Cuba will be one of the most interesting stories of our time.
