Latest on Terror Arrests in Mecca

Here is the latest from the Associated Press on the gun battle between Saudi police and al Qaeda terrorists in Mecca which we posted on this morning. It appears that the terrorists were apprehended as they were about to launch a major terrorist assault on targets in Mecca. It is still unclear whether they were caught by good fortune due to a chance encounter at a roadblock, or whether the authorities had intelligence about the impending attacks.
Police cornered the terrorists–or “terrorists,” as the AP calls them–in an apartment building. Saudi authorities say that “the apartment was booby-trapped and ready to explode. Some 72 bombs of different sizes were found with numerous other weapons, including semiautomatic rifles, knives, communication devices, bomb-making materials and masks.”
