Yearning to Breathe Free

This is a tune-up for tomorrow, I guess, but this photo really struck me. The guy in the torch is Charlie DeLeo, who worked as a maintenance man on the Statue for 27 years. He is now retired, but can’t quite stay away; he still works there as a volunteer.

It’s funny how some symbols are so powerful that they keep coming back, generation after generation, and cropping up in unlikely places. Like Tiananmen Square, or wherever people yearn to breathe free.
