Robert Mugabe, Zimbabwe’s petty tyrant, has become increasingly violent as his country spirals toward chaos and bankruptcy. This has led one African-American group, the TransAfrica forum, to write an open letter to Mugabe criticizing the “increasing intolerant, repressive and violent policies of your government.”
The New York Times reports on the controversy that has ensued among African-Americans, many of whom are outraged that Trans-Africa would criticize any black leader, no matter how tyrannical. All participants in the debate appear to agree that Mugabe would be immune from criticism if he were only killing white people. The controversy is not an edifying spectacle.
