Australian Papers Attack Howard

If you think American newspapers are over the top, check out this headline from the Sydney Morning Herald: “PM sorry for relying on Iraq lies.” The reference, of course, is to the infamous Niger/uranium story. You have to read the article to the last sentence to learn that: “Mr. Howard joined Mr. Blair this week in asserting that this had been based on more intelligence than that provided by the forged Niger documents.”
I have no idea, of course, what intelligence the British may have. (Their intelligence agencies have said that because it comes from another country, they have not shared it with the CIA.) But British intelligence officers hostile to Tony Blair’s administration have anonymously leaked a number of criticisms of Blair to British newspapers. It is interesting that none of these anonymous sources have so far denied the truth of Blair’s claim that British intelligence has information supporting the claim that Iraq attempted to procure uranium in Africa.
