As if on cue. . .

here is Brent Scowcroft telling Israel to tolerate yesterday’s deaths in the name of the “road map to peace.” The fundamental dishonesty of Scowcroft’s position is captured in the following sentence: “It will require determined American leadership to persuade the parties to continue to push ahead on the road map and to prevent this cruel act from derailing the entire process.” In reality, of course, it will take nothing of the kind to persuade the Palestinians to continue to “push ahead,” since they are not really required to do anything other than obtain concessions in exchange for empty statements (why would the “cruel act” of killing Israelis “derail” their participation?). But here’s the sad part — I’m not sure how much leadership will be required to keep Israel in the process either.
