Remembering the Man in Black

Taken together, the New York Times and the Washington Post pieces on Johnny Cash add up to a rounded portrait of the man and his music.
The Times’s Jon Pareles focuses on the themes of Cash’s music and quotes Cash himself: “I love songs about horses, railroads, land, Judgment Day, family, hard times, whiskey, courtship, marriage, adultery, separation, murder, war, prison, rambling, damnation, home, salvation, death, pride, humor, piety, rebellion, patriotism, larceny, determination, tragedy, rowdiness, heartbreak and love. And Mother. And God.” The Post’s Louie Estrada provides a fuller account of Cash’s life, including his harrowing bouts of substance abuse.
