“Howard’s Hatefest”

Deborah Orin describes the Howard Dean fundraiser in Manhattan that went off the rails last week. This is a story that was buried because reporters don’t want to slow down the Dean train, and for the more mundane reason that there wasn’t any film footage available. Orin criticizes Dean for not stopping the racist, profanity-laden “comedy” at the fundraiser. This criticism is hard to argue with, but I think that more fundamentally, the incident tells us something about Dean’s supporters. The angry Democratic left is crude, ill-mannered, uninformed, and surprisingly stupid. And also, not funny.
