I Think They’ve Got Him

Zarqawi, that is. American officials have leaked to the New York Times a seventeen-page memorandum which they believe is authored by Zarqawi. It is addressed to the leadership of al Qaeda, and urges them to join in an attack on the Shiites in Iraq, in hopes that the Shiites will counter-attack against the Sunnis. The memo laments the failure, so far, of the terrorists’ efforts:

The memo says extremists are failing to enlist support inside the country, and have been unable to scare the Americans into leaving. It even laments Iraq’s lack of mountains in which to take refuge.

Authorities say the memo was discovered on a CD that an al Qaeda operative was trying to smuggle from Iraq to Afghanistan, presumably to be delivered to Osama bin Laden or whoever is left of his leadership group.
It’s tempting to speculate, however, that Zarqawi himself may be in custody. First they raid his safe house in Baghdad; then they leak the news that they found a seven-pound block of cyanide salts there; now we have a memo written by Zarqawi to his al Qaeda bosses. It could be a coincidence, but it seems likely that the U.S. military has captured Zarqawi already, or, at a minimum, is closing in on him.
