Against child abduction

Rep. Mark Kennedy is one of our favorite Minnesota officeholders. He’s a rock solid Republican representing a predominantly Republican district. Yesterday Patty Wetterling announced her candidacy for the congressional seat held by Kennedy: “Wetterling steps into political race.”
Mrs. Wetterling’s son Jacob was abducted in 1989 and has never been found. Since then Mrs. Wetterling has generated enormous good will advocating laws to promote child safety while never hinting at her political views on any issue, and she apparently doesn’t mean to change now:

“Some people have said I am a single-issue candidate, focusing too much on the future of our children, and I guess my answer to that is ‘Guilty,'” she said.
“I want to go to Washington because the path of hope I started to walk down 14 years ago has led me there again and again to find solutions to difficult problems, to build a better, safer world for our children.”

On the issues of concern to voters of her district, Mrs. Wetterling offered the following:

She called the war “a statement of failure” but said she opposed quick withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq. She expressed opposition to a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage and said she supports abortion rights but is opposed to second-trimester and late-term abortions.
“I am not a partisan person,” she said. “I would like to be a reasonable voice working to find common ground on critical issues, because too much is at stake.”

I suspect that in addition to reiterating her position against child abduction, Mrs. Wetterling will also frequently oppose “partisanship” and speak in favor of “common ground.” We will stay tuned for developments.
