Pro-Baath Party protesters turned out in Rome yesterday to demonstrate against President Bush’s visit to Italy. To show their support for Saddam Hussein’s murderous regime, these Italian fascists shot fireworks and flares into the Italian Defense Ministry.
Lest anyone take this protest seriously, note that the pro-Saddam demonstrators are matched by what appears to be an equal number of photographers. It’s a good thing, I guess, that the international Left now exists mainly as theater. The motley crew that travels the world to protest G-8 meetings and the like, mimicking the demonstrators of past generations, reminds me of a group of Civil War re-enacters. They’re strictly a nostalgia item; the war is over.
