From the Globe archives

Reader Jonathan Sanford has sent us the PDF of the Boston Globe’s May 30, 1984 story by Chris Black on the first Senate campaign of then-Lieutenant Governor John Kerry: “Kerry asks cuts in defense outlay” (with luck we’ll supply the link later today). The fourth paragraph of the Globe story begins: “He recommended cancellation of 27 weapons systems…”
The fifth paragraph begins: “He recommended reductions in 18 other systems…” The last paragraph of the story provides an echo of Kerry’s bookkeeper’s critique of the Iraq war yesterday: “He said that some of the defense money should be redirected to restore cuts made in domestic programs.”
Quotable quote:

Kerry said that Massachusetts would be “only negligibly negatively impacted” by his proposals…
