A lot of people commented at the time that it was not smart of John Kerry to take a highly visible vacation windsurfing off Nantucket. Kerry seems obsessed with creating an image of himself as a sportsman, as he invites camera crews for photo-ops of him riding his bike, snowboarding, windsurfing, and tossing baseballs and footballs (poorly, I might add). He’s even gone so far as to invite reporters along to watch him buy a jockstrap.
It seems not to have occurred to Kerry that windsurfing is not exactly the sport of the common man, nor is it the ideal metaphor for a Presidential campaign. Sure enough, the Bush campaign released a new ad today called “Windsurfing.” It shows footage of Kerry windsurfing first in one direction, then in the other, with narration about Kerry’s flip-flops. The ad can be viewed here.
