The fat lady sings in South Dakota

John Thune’s defeat of Tom Daschle only adds to the sweet taste of victory tonight. Jon Lauck at Dascle v. Thune persuades me that it is safe to recognize Thune’s triumph, even if the classless Daschle has yet to come to terms with it. Professor Lauck also provides the appropriate illustration below.

HINDROCKET adds: I’m pretty weary and my arithmetic may be off, but I think the Republicans netted four Senate seats tonight. If so, that is far beyond my expectations, and no doubt a bitter blow to Democrats who harbored fantasies of retaking the chamber. Included in this total, to my surprise, is Lisa Murkowski’s apparent victory over Tony Knowles. I had thought that the nepotism involved in her appointment would doom her against a popular politician like Knowles. Also, conservatives in Alaska don’t consider Lisa to be one of them, and there was little enthusiasm for her candidacy. But Ted Stevens stumped for her in the later days of the campaign, and I assume the wide margin in her favor reflected Alaskans’ loyalty to the Republican Party and their determination not to let the Senate fall into the hands of the Democrats. Well done.
