Colin Powell is resigning, according to Fox News. Three other cabinet members are leaving, as well: Spencer Abraham (Energy), Rodney Paige (Education) and Ann Veneman (Agriculture). That makes five resignations since the election less than two weeks.
Powell is a great American and public servant, but his policy preferences are not ours and, to a substantial degree, not the president’s it seems. Powell seemed like an asset when he used his credibility to try to persuade other countries to join the coaltion of the willing, but probably outlived that sort of usefulness as a result of the failure to find the WMD he so publicly insisted justified our military action. The less said about Powell’s views on Israeli-Palestinian relations the better.
