Let’s Not Push this Diversity Thing Too Far

I mean, it’s all well and good. But you have to draw the line somewhere–like at hiring Republicans.
Today the Rocky Mountain News quoted us on why 60 Minutes went astray:

[A]s John Hinderaker plausibly argues on powerlineblog.com in a postmortem on CBS News’ Rathergate, “If there is a single overriding explanation for how a fake story, intended to influence a presidential election through the use of forged documents, could have been promulgated by 60 Minutes, it is the lack of diversity at CBS News.”
Hinderaker means ideological diversity, of course. He believes the existence of a political conservative among those who prepared and vetted the report on President Bush’s service in the National Guard would have led to tougher questions about the origins of the documents and their authenticity. We tend to agree, but unfortunately the conclusion rests upon a premise rejected by both CBS and the independent panel that investigated the broadcast: that political bias influenced the rush to air the now-retracted report.
CBS officials once promised to get to the bottom of the discredited 60 Minutes Wednesday broadcast. So long as they deny any ideological motive behind it, however, they’ve failed.

Well put.
