Two news accounts add significant factual information to the story of the shooting of the car carrying Giuliana Sgrena and Nicola Calipari. Rowan Scarborough’s Washington Times article quotes an internal Pentagon memo on the shooting: “Italy didn’t plan safe escape for hostage.” Craig Gordon’s Newsday article is also sourced out of Washington and adds details consistent with Scarborough’s (ignore the headline): “U.S engagement rules under fire.” According to Gordon’s account, the shot that killed Calipari was aimed at the vehicle’s engine block.
It seems to me that the underlying explanations consistent with these accounts are reckless stupidity on the part of the Italians, or a set-up along the lines of the one that Roger L. Simon hypothesized on Sunday. In either case, America’s haters can’t handle the truth.
