An act of good will

Neo-neocon has a nice piece about the affinity between Iraqi Kurds and Jews. She notes that early in the 20th century, Baghdad’s population was estimated to be one-third Jewish. Since then, Jews have all but disappeared. However, older Kurds apparently remember them fondly, and younger Kurds apparently listen to Israeli radio, watch Israeli television, and read Israeli websites.
All of this helps explain the statement that Iraq’s new Kurdish president Talibani reportedly made, to the effect that Arabs, Kurds, and Jews all will be treated equally by the new government.
