Al Qaeda’s last stand?

This report in the Washington Times by Rowan Scarborough suggests that the war in Iraq “looks like last stand for al Qaeda.” I agree with Scarborough that the war “is increasingly looking more like a showdown with Osama bin Laden’s al Qaeda followers than a battle primarily against Saddam Hussein loyalists.” I also agree that the war looks like Zarqawi’s last stand. And it follows that the war is an enormously important battleground in the war on terror.
Whether it’s al Qaeda’s last stand seems less clear. And, even if it is, Scarborough wisely stops short of suggesting that we won’t have to face like-minded and similarly lethal terrorist organizations down the road.
