McKinney’s tinfoil gavel

The Democratic Party disgraces itself with the place of honor accorded Al Sharpton and other notorious anti-Semites. Last year the Seattle Times published Professor Edward Alexander’s column taking notice: “The Democratic Party’s anti-Semitism problem.”
Foremost among the figures discussed by Alexander is of course Sharpton. If there is a more vile person in American public life, I don’t know who he is. In June 2004 John Kerry had this to say about Sharpton: “During the primaries, there was one person who consistently was always there, keeping the peace and the compass going in the right direction, and that was Al Sharpton.” Is there a serious Democrat who dares to give Sharpton the dressing down he deserves?
Alexander also discussed Jesse Jackson and Cynthia McKinney. The Democratic Party has long foregone the reckoning that it is due with Jackson. But Jackson is ancient history; Sharpton and McKinney are the future of the party.
What Alexander said last year regarding McKinney is important and correct, though much more could be said. Alexander omitted any mention of her past support by Abdurahman Alamoudi, then-president of the American Muslin Council, who last year pled guilty to being Muhammar Khadaffy’s bagman in connection with the plot to assassinate Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah. At the time of his support of McKinney in 2000, Alamoudi was well known as a supporter of Hamas and Hezbollah.
Alexander also omitted any mention regarding her father’s attribution of McKinney’s then-pending defeat immediately before the Democratic primary in 2002 to “Jews, J-E-W-S.” That is a statement which McKinney has never disavowed or otherwise commented upon. As McKinney has now returned to Congress, will any journalist trouble himself to ask the powers-that-be in the Democratic Party about McKinney’s standing with it?
McKinney sunk to new depths last week as reported in this Atlanta Journal-Constitution article: “McKinney reopens 9/11.” On Friday McKinney led a Capitol Hill hearing on whether the Bush administration was involved in the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The article quotes panelist Melvin Goodman, described as “a former CIA official”: “Congresswoman McKinney is viewed as a contrarian. And I hope someday her views will be considered conventional wisdom.” (Click here for more Goodman: “I resigned from the CIA in 1990 because of the politicization of intelligence…”)
Actually, among many of those who have heard of her, Cynthia McKinney is viewed as a raving lunatic, but I don’t think that AJC staffer Bob Kemper cast his net too widely. More to the point, however,is there a serious Democrat who will give McKinney the dressing down she deserves? What a sickening disgrace.
