Bob Denver, RIP

Steve Hayward notes the death of Bob Denver in “Gilligan unbound, for eternity.” I’m dating myself, but Denver etched himself indelibly into my consciousness not as the character stranded on that lame sitcom, but as the ineffably cool Maynard G. Krebs on “The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis.” Maynard was television’s first beatnik, the first guy I’d ever heard mention Dizzy Gillespie and Thelonius Monk, and the most voluble fan of films such as “The Monster that Devoured Cleveland.” RIP.
