Only love can break a heart

Rock artist Gene Pitney died in his hotel room on Tuesday after a successful performance in Cardiff, Wales, at the age of 65. Pitney was a phenomenally talented singer, songwriter and performer. This morning NRO has posted the finest appreciation of Pitney that I have seen this week, Dawn Eden’s “I’ve never, ever been away.” Tom Spaulding noted Pitney’s death in “Town without Pitney.” The AP’s spare obituary focuses on Pitney’s long list of popular songs — from those he composed, such as “Hello Mary Lou” and “He’s a Rebel,” to those he performed, such as the fabuolous David-Bacharach composition “Only Love Can Break a Heart.” RIP.
