When Is A Democrat Not A Democrat?

When she returns contributions from Jack Abramoff’s Indian tribe clients. The Associated Press reports on Senator Debbie Stabenow’s refunding of a contribution from the Saginaw Chippewa tribe without ever mentioning that Stabenow is a Democrat, even though the party affiliations of all other politicians mentioned in the article are given in the usual way. Not only that, the AP spins the article into an attack on Republicans, even though the only news is about a Democrat:

Abramoff, who pleaded guilty in January to federal charges of conspiracy, tax evasion and mail fraud, turned to Republicans, including Sen. Conrad Burns of Montana, to overcome the Bush administration’s objection to providing the school funding for the tribe.

Apparently he turned to some Democrats, too. But that isn’t the story line the AP is trying to peddle, even though, in this case, Stabenow actually reported the contribution falsely, ascribing it to an individual rather than to the tribe that donated the money.
