General disarray

Over at the American Spectator blog, Jed Babbin offers his take on developments at the CIA. Babbin predicts that General Hayden will be confirmed as the new Director. However, the uproar about his military background is well-calculated to undermine Hayden’s effectiveness once he arrives at Langley. If Hayden resists the CIA bureaucrats who favor business as usual (“the entrenched CIA Praetorian Guard”) and fails to conduct their turf war against the Defense Department, he will be neutralized through criticism that he is favoring the military. If he doesn’t resist, the result will be business as usual. In either case, says Babbin, “the essential transformation of the intelligence agencies to make America safer” will not occur.
