Something to smile about

By a vote of 57-36, the Senate has confirmed Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the D.C. Circuit. The White House and the Senate leadership should be commended for getting this done.

I don’t know Kavanaugh, but I can’t help but think that he comes out of this process a huge winner. Because the Dems held up his nomination for so long, he was able to serve for an extended period in a dream job — White House staff secretary. And now he has a lifetime appointment to the most important of the federal courts of appeals.

UPDATE: The following Democrats voted for Kavanaugh’s confirmation: Byrd, Carper, Landrieu, and Ben Nelson (Nebraska).

The following Dems (in addition to the four listed above) voted for cloture so debate would end and the voting could proceed: Biden, Feinstein, Kohl, Lieberman, Lincoln, Nelson (Florida), Obama, and Pryor.

JOHN adds: Yes, and, notwithstanding Howard Dean’s hysterical opposition, Gen. Michael Hayden has been confirmed as CIA director on a lopsided 78-15 vote.

There is a lot of talk about President Bush being a “lame duck” with diminished power due to his lowered poll ratings. Maybe. But he got Hayden confirmed in less than three weeks. Does anyone seriously think that if we had a Democrat president, we would be getting nominees like Gen. Hayden and Brett Kavanaugh? These are critically important posts. It is hard to overstate the importance of having a reasonably conservative President in the White House, and a Republican majority in the Senate.
