A report commissioned by the president of Duke University concluded that the university “underestimated” the rape allegations against members of the lacrosse team in part because the Durham police intially said that the accuser “kept changing her story and was not credible.” For example, the police said that the woman initially told them she was raped by 20 white men, then she said she was attacked by three.

To say that Duke underestimated the rape allegations is one way of putting it. However, given the statements by the police about the accuser’s conflicting stories, one might just as easily say that Duke is overestimating them now.
