Zarqawi Linked to Government Officials?

The Associated Press says that, according to an Iraqi legislator, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi had the telephone numberes of “senior Iraqi officials” on his cell phone:

Waiel Abdul-Latif, a member of former Prime Minister Ayad Allawi’s party, said Monday that authorities found the numbers after al-Zarqawi, leader of al Qaeda in Iraq, was killed in a U.S. air strike on June 7.

Abdul-Latif did not give names of the officials. But he said they included ministry employees and members of parliament.

Interesting if true, obviously. The same AP report contains a claim by someone who is said to be Zarqawi’s first wife that he was betrayed by al Qaeda leaders “in exchange for a promise to let up in the search for Osama bin Laden.” This makes little or no sense, and there is no explanation of how she would know it even if it were true, but no doubt the lefty web sites will add this claim to their hodgepodge of conspiracy theories.
