Terrorists? What Terrorists?

Blog of the Week Vital Perspective notes that the European Union has declined to place Hezbollah on its list of terrorist organizations. Two weeks ago, EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana said that the EU lacked “sufficient data” to classify Hezbollah as terrorist. Which is sort of like saying that we can’t quite figure out whether the Knights of Columbus are Catholic.

Earlier today, Finnish Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja sort of explained the EU’s reluctance to offend Hezbollah:

Given the sensitive situation, I don’t think this is something we will be acting on now.

Which means, I guess, that the EU thinks it would be rude to identify Hezbollah as a terrorist organization while it is in the midst of carrying out terrorist acts. Who, exactly, is going to man the “international force” that Olmert’s government is now calling for?
