Complicated life

In “Complicated Life” on the Kinks’ classic “Muswell Hillbillies” album, the singer awakes “with a pain in my neck, A pain in my heart and a pain in my chest.” He goes to the doctor and is advised:

You gotta slow down your life or you’re gonna be dead,
Cut out the struggle and strife,
It only complicates your life.

The song concludes, “Life is so complicated.”
Something of the same spirit is on display in Inside Higher Ed’s retrospective on the riot that prevented Jim Gilchrist from speaking at the event hosted week before last by the Columbia University College Republicans. Today’s Inside Higher Ed article is “The complications of free speech.” (Thanks to Joe Knippenberg of No Left Turns.)
